The movable alphabet is an excellent tool that the Montessori School utilizes once children start to master consonant and vowel sounds. A child will use a box of sorted lowercase red (consonants) and blue (vowels) letters to begin to phonetically sound and spell out words on a defined space. This is an excellent tool for them to use prior to them having the skill set to use a writing tool and/or conjugation of using a writing tool.
The movable alphabet is a great guide to see where the child’s skills are and can help the teacher to see where they will need to focus their work with the child. This gives the teacher insight to where the child is in terms of the stages of spelling, and can help the teacher focus on what sounds to present and where to focus the child’s language development.
